Uber and Pony.ai are expanding their partnership to operate over 2,000 robotaxis in Europe, with four additional cities to be added after Zagreb. The companies will combine Pony.ai’s Level 4 autonomous driving technology with Uber’s reservation and payment system.

The partnership aims to bring autonomous vehicles to European cities, with Pony.ai providing the autonomous driving technology, in-vehicle systems, and operational knowledge. Uber will manage ride reservations, payments, customer service, and user access through its platform.

Expansion Plans

The companies plan to deploy the robotaxis in five European cities, but have not yet announced the names of the four cities beyond Zagreb. The rollout will be gradual, with each city being added separately, rather than a single launch date for all cities.

According to the report, Pony.ai will provide its Seviye 4 autonomous driving technology, which has already been deployed in several Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. The company aims to expand its robotaxi fleet to over 3,000 vehicles by the end of the year.

Technical Details

Pony.ai’s Gen-7 Robotaxi system features significant cost reductions, with a 70% decrease in the material cost of autonomous driving hardware, an 80% reduction in computing hardware needs, and a 68% decrease in LiDAR costs. The system also uses automotive-grade components and allows a single remote operator to monitor up to 20 vehicles.

The company has developed a new Level 4 control unit in partnership with NVIDIA, which uses DRIVE AGX Thor and NVLink technologies to process multi-sensor data and evaluate complex traffic scenarios. However, it is not clear if this control unit will be used in all 2,000+ vehicles to be deployed in Europe.

Regulatory Environment

The European Union has established a regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles, but individual countries have different procedures for testing and commercial deployment on public roads. The city selection process will take into account these regulatory differences, and the companies will need to obtain necessary permits and approvals before launching their services.
